To process large volumes of computer data such as computer animation production, many animators and directors need a high performance digital work environment. For example, a substantial infrastructure consisting of a broadband network and high performance computer systems to work in collaboration flexibly.Animators in the MMTC can do efficient animation painting work while having secure communication with other members and utilizing an "animation production management system" and an "animation production security system".

(6) CG systemIn recent years it has become necessary to use CG systems for efficient animation production. The MMTC Research project introduced aCG system that has installed Lightwave3D [4], MAYA Complete [5] and Cinema4D XL [6]. The CG system also is equipped with application software that generates video contents from digital data. LightWave 3D provides fast and accurate light reflection refraction. The Depth of Field filter included in LightWave offers rendering of hidden geometry for accurate background blurring*2, optional iris shapes, and the aspect ratio and rotation angle of the camera lens, in addition to the traditional depth of field control. MAYA Complete provides NURBS*3 Modeling, Character Animation for creating realistic digital characters, MAYA Paint Effects for easily creating 3D scenes or 2D canvases, integrated particle systems, Integrated Renderer, and Universal Rendering. CINEMA 4D XL offers fast workflow in a fully integrated 3D environment combined with the fastest ray tracer*4. Generated 3D information can be exported to the 2D animation tool Animo and can be handled in the 2D hierarchical scene graph using all the effects and filters of the existing 2D functions.
(4) Making the effectsThe animator creates effects such as liquid, fire, smoke, dust, clouds and so on by using the CG systems. The animation cuts finished in the painting process can be imported to the CG creation process. In the CG creation process the animator can also generate the full CG animation cuts and export to the camera work step in the painting process.
As I described in series#1, the practical data of animation production is important the research activity success. In fact, we can know about the skill level of each animator and know everything about the animator's roll in the work-sharing environment through the series of production for DOKACHIN story. We understood that the training for the animator is important as well as improvement of the computer systems for animation production. When the MMTC was constructed, training courses in computer animation painting were held in Naha city. We recruited of animator trainees in Sept. 2000, and 447 people applied for the advertisement. After four months training, 180 people remained and they studied the additional course for the computer operation of Animo. They have experienced five months computer animation training, and 40 animators passed the Animo painting examination. They are the main members of the computer animation work group in the MMTC at this point. All members are from Okinawa and they have been progressing well. Alaso, 25 new members joined the MMTC animators group, and they are creating animation cuts in the computer animation production environment.
